Poorly Trained Nursing Staff Fail

Poorly Trained Nursing Staff Fail – A state and federal government report found that a nursing home violated mandatory reporting rules and failed to “recognize the behaviors of Sexual Elder Abuse.” Multiple nurses and staff at the nursing facility witnessed a male resident with dementia sexually abusing female residents with dementia. The nursing home did not take action. Other residents and employees saw the male resident forcing female dementia residents to touch his genitals or witnessed a male resident standing over women with his jeans down and wrapped around his legs. The Director of Nurses for the nursing home said that the behavior was nothing more than “consensual activity between dementia residents” and nothing can be done “unless the man crossed the line.” Later, another staff member saw this male resident fondling a female dementia patient’s breasts.

Unfortunately, both nursing home operators and assisted living operators are failing to train staff on how to recognize nonconsensual sexual conduct and consent issues. These facilities typically brush off sexual abuse as “consensual” between dementia residents.  It is time that nursing home operators take sexual behaviors seriously and train staff when it involves dementia residents who are vulnerable and easily taken advantage of.
