Three Women Died Entrapped Between Mattress and Bed Handles Found in Nursing Homes

Bed handles Found in Nursing Homes – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) and Bedhandles, Inc. announced the voluntary recall of over 110,000 adult portable bedhandles used in beds in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This recall was announced after three elderly women died after becoming entrapped between the mattress and their bedhandles due to a product defect where the handle would shift out of place, creating a dangerous gap between the bedhandle and the side of the mattress. The recalled models were sold from January 1994 through December 2007. Having dangerous gaps between bedhandles or bedrails and the sides of mattresses poses a serious risk of entrapment, strangulation and death.

If you or your loved one are using this product, you should immediately stop using these recalled bedhandles. Unsafe beds or gaps between bedrails and mattresses create a real safety hazard for our seniors and disabled. Unsafe beds, coupled with lack of supervision in care facilities, can lead to strangulation, entrapment and death. If you believe that you or your loved one has been the victim of a defective bed or a care facility’s failure to keep your loved one safe and would like to file a complaint or investigate your case, please contact York Law Firm at 916-643-2200. We are dedicated to representing elders and dependent adults who have been injured, neglected or abused.
